Protective potential of plant extracts in experimental systems in vitro and ex vivo

Project leader: KatarĂna Kozics
Project duration: 2012 - 2015

In spite of advances in modern medicine which possess quantum of synthetic medicaments, a great importance is ascribed to alternative medicine employing plant products. Positive effects of plants are attributed to the biologically active compounds which could reduce severe impacts of the environment, life style, eventually eliminate side effects of drugs. In the framework of the proposed project we intend 1 to determine DNA-protective effects of some plant extracts and their triterpenoid components with help of in vitro and ex vivo systems using permanent and freshly isolated mammalian cells; 2 to characterize the most abundant biologically active components in studied extracts; 3 to assess selected biochemical parameters in cells isolated from supplemented animals or in cells treated with extracts in vitro; 4 to analyze changes in cell signaling and cell cycle after the treatment with plant extracts in dependence of system used.
